From Classroom Knowledge to Real-World Skills Evaluation

The Challenge Summarized

In bioindustrial manufacturing, a single missed warning sign can have serious consequences. While it may result in the loss of an entire production batch, the risks often extend much further, as facilities frequently operate with hazardous chemicals, high-pressure systems, and extreme temperatures.

When issues such as leaks, spills, or equipment failures go undetected, they can threaten worker safety, harm the environment, and impact surrounding communities. This makes effective process monitoring critical, requiring operators to identify anomalies quickly, make informed decisions under pressure, and maintain strict quality, safety, and compliance standards.

BCSI evaluates whether students and professionals can perform effectively in these high-stakes environments. Before stepping onto a real production floor, candidates need opportunities to demonstrate their ability to recognize and respond to issues that can arise during the manufacturing process.

The Vision

As an organization focused on bioindustrial workforce assessment, BCSI was looking for new ways to evaluate candidates’ skills more effectively. Rather than relying solely on traditional assessment methods, they envisioned a realistic simulation environment that could be used to evaluate candidates’ decision-making and process-monitoring skills.

To bring that vision to life, BCSI partnered with Scopic to develop a process-monitoring simulator integrated with Canvas.

The Scopic Solution

With a clear understanding of the client’s goals, our team handled the frontend and backend development of the simulator from start to finish.

Using React, Node.js, and AWS CloudFormation, among other technologies, we developed a custom platform that allows candidates to monitor production conditions, review temperature, pressure, and volume readings, identify potential anomalies, and make critical decisions in a risk-free environment. We also built a backend that gives educators the flexibility to configure scenarios and timeframes, creating a wide range of assessment scenarios to evaluate candidates under different conditions.

Supported by U.S. federal funding, the project transformed BCSI’s vision into a flexible and scalable platform that continues to support the next generation of bioindustrial professionals.
