Case Study
OrthoSelect collaborated with Scopic to enhance their treatment planning procedures through advanced AI-driven technologies, aiming to improve efficiency and accuracy in orthodontic treatments.
About OrthoSelect AI
OrthoSelect was founded in 2004 with a mission to help orthodontists achieve greater clinical efficiency and provide improved treatment outcomes for their patients through advanced technology. With the help of Scopic and other developers, OrthoSelect developed its flagship product, DIBS AI, using heuristics; and it has now evolved to incorporate AI and deep learning. This integrated software and hardware platform automates orthodontic case setups, predicts outcomes based on bracket placement, and delivers highly accurate, 3D-printed bracket transfer appliances (commonly known as IDB trays).
The Challenge
OrthoSelect wanted to empower orthodontists through custom solutions, however, they faced the challenge of developing a desktop application capable of generating precise 3D models of patients’ teeth. This required the creation of a deep learning model from scratch. The iterative training process was time-consuming but essential for establishing a robust AI model.
The Solution
Scopic partnered with OrthoSelect to address this challenge by implementing an AI-driven approach. The solution involved:
- AI-Powered Teeth Segmentation: Utilizing deep learning to segment teeth accurately from 3D scans, enhancing the precision of treatment planning.
- Iterative Training Process: Training the AI model on 1,200 labeled datasets to ensure high accuracy in teeth segmentation and model generation.
- Automated Workflow Enhancements:
- Step 1: Using AI to fix the rotation of scans from different scanners.
- Step 2: Employing AI to remove excess tissue and scan imperfections.
- Step 3: AI-driven teeth segmentation and identification.
- Step 4: AI for placement of markers such as Occlusal, Long Axis, and Marginal ridges to improve bracket placement, utilizing the previously gathered data.
The Result
- Improved Accuracy: AI-driven teeth segmentation and marker placement increased the precision of orthodontic treatment plans.
- Increased Efficiency: Automating steps 1-4 of the workflow reduced manual intervention, saving time and reducing the potential for human error.
- Enhanced User Experience: Orthodontists experienced smoother operations with reliable AI-generated 3D models, allowing for better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Internally, these technological advancements have freed up precious doctor, staff, and chair time by shortening and simplifying brackets bonding appointments, as well as reducing overall treatment time through significant decreases in wire bending and bracket repositioning.
